Herbert Citroen is gevonden-voorwerper in Hotel Grand Nautilus in het kustplaatsje Owee aan Zee. In de kelder bewaart en bewaakt hij de verloren voorwerpen van het hotel. Op een dag klimt er een meisje langs het kelderraampje naar binnen en vraagt aan Herbert om haar te verstoppen. Ze is op de vlucht voor een vreselijk uitziende kapitein met een grote ijzeren bootshaak in de plaats van een hand. Maar het meisje, Violet, komt niet voor niets terecht bij Herbert Citroen, de beroemde gevonden-voorwerper van het Grand Hotel Nautilus. Ze wil 'gevonden' worden.
Haar ouders zijn kort na haar geboorte spoorloos verdwenen toen ze een kamer in Hotel Grand Nautilus hadden geboekt.
Heeft de verdwijning van Violets ouders iets te maken met de legende van de malamander, een geheimzinnig zeemonster waarnaar haar vader onderzoek deed? En wie is die verschrikkelijke bootshaakman? Zal het Herbert Citroen lukken om Violet Purperwier te helpen bij haar zoektocht? En de belangrijkste vraag waar iedereen naar op zoek lijkt: 'Wat is het geheim van de malamander?
Thomas Taylor weet een heel geheimzinnig en filmisch decor neer te zetten. Met heel originele bedenkingen. Zoals een gevonden-voorwerper, een cameraluna, een pratende kat, een zeeapotheek met een zeemeeraap die boekrecepten voorschrijft. Heerlijk!
Het boek bestaat uit korte hoofdstukken, wat het boek makkelijk leesbaar maakt. Met telkens in de hoofding, een kleine passende illustratie van de auteur. Voor wie het nog niet wist, Thomas Taylor tekende de cover van het eerste Harry Potter-boek.
Elk hoofdstuk zorgt voor nieuwe vragen, die tevens een tipje van de sluier van het geheim oplichten, waardoor je móet blijven lezen tot het eind om het geheim van de malamander te achterhalen. Maar aangezien op het einde van het boek nog niet alle opgeworpen vragen over de personages beantwoord zijn, vraagt het om een vervolg. Dat gelukkig in het voorjaar 2021 zal gaan verschijnen: 'Het geheim van de gargantis'
Dit boek is een aanrader voor lezers vanaf 9 à 10 jaar die houden van fantasie, spanning, humor, mysterie en avontuur.
